The NOAA files this site is built from now run through 2025: the National Hurricane Center's HURDAT2 revision of September 2026 includes the 2025 hurricane season, and the Storm Prediction Center's tornado and hail files run to the end of December 2025. This page counts the year from those files and compares it with the ten years before it, 2015–2024. Figures for a recent year are the least settled in any of these databases and can change in later revisions.
Hurricanes and tropical storms
HURDAT2 lists 13 Atlantic systems in 2025, of which 13 reached tropical-storm strength, 6 became hurricanes and 4 major hurricanes (Category 3 or stronger). The strongest, Melissa, peaked at 190 mph, Category 5. In the eastern and central Pacific there were 20 systems: 20 named, 11 hurricanes and 5 major hurricanes, the strongest Kiko at 144 mph.
Only 1 of the 33 passed within 75 miles of a US city on this site: Chantal 2025 (110 cities). The rest never came within that distance of a city here, so an active season in the basin and a quiet one for US cities can be the same season. Chantal reached cities in 2 states; its strongest wind at a closest pass was 58 mph (tropical storm), 35 miles from Mc Clellanville, SC.

Hurricanes only; storm pages exist for storms that came near a US city.
The strongest storms of the season
The Atlantic major hurricanes of 2025 were Erin, Gabrielle, Humberto, Melissa; in the Pacific, Iona, Erick, Flossie, Kiko, Priscilla. Erin, Humberto and Melissa reached Category 5 at peak. Peak strength is the strongest sustained wind anywhere along a track; the storms in this list that never came near a US city have no page on this site, because the site is organised around the cities a storm reached.
Tornadoes
SPC recorded 1,383 US tornadoes in 2025, more than the 1,298 a year it averaged in 2015–2024. 40 were rated EF3 or higher (average 26), and tornadoes killed 67 people (average 48) and injured 260. Hail
The SPC hail file has 9,347 reports for 2025, more than the 8,773 a year it averaged in 2015–2024. 7,968 were 1 inch or larger and 1,058 were 2 inches or larger (average 817). The largest report of the year was 6 inches, on May 25, 2025 in Texas.
Large hail made up 11.3% of 2025 reports, against 9.3% over the previous ten years. Reports of 1 inch or more were 85% of the year's total, which reflects the Weather Service's 1-inch severe threshold as much as the weather.
Reading a single year
One year is a small sample, and tornado and hail counts depend on how many reports reach the National Weather Service as well as on the weather. The ten-year comparison is a reference point, not a forecast for the next year. Each city page on this site shows its own storms, tornadoes and hail, including 2025. For current warnings, see the National Weather Service.
