It reached tropical-storm strength on September 24, hurricane strength on September 26 and major-hurricane strength on September 27. Its peak was 161 mph (140 knots), Category 5, on September 28, and its lowest central pressure was 937 millibars on September 28. It spent about 4 days at hurricane strength. HURDAT2 marks 3 landfalls within 50 miles of a US city on this site; they were on September 28 at 150 mph (Category 4), 4 miles from Bokeelia, FL; on September 28 at 144 mph (Category 4), 9 miles from Punta Gorda, FL; on September 30 at 81 mph (Category 1), 10 miles from Georgetown, SC. It has 2 more landfalls in the record farther from the cities here. Its centre passed within 75 miles of 336 US cities, in 3 states, most in Florida (157) and South Carolina (94), between September 28 and October 1.
