It reached tropical-storm strength on September 3 and hurricane and major-hurricane strength on September 5. Its peak was 167 mph (145 knots), Category 5, on September 11, and its lowest central pressure was 910 millibars on September 12. It spent about 11 days at hurricane strength. HURDAT2 marks 2 landfalls within 50 miles of a US city on this site; they were on September 16 at 121 mph (Category 3), 11 miles from Gulf Shores, AL; on September 24 at 35 mph (tropical depression), 21 miles from Bridge City, TX. Its centre passed within 75 miles of 191 US cities, in 4 states, most in Alabama (139) and Mississippi (20), between September 16 and September 23.
